Lately, I’ve been obsessed with a TikTok creator who transforms men’s button-down shirts into the most adorable ruffled-collared blouses with short or 3/4 length sleeves. The look is effortlessly chic, and the idea of upcycling is right up my alley. The only problem? The well-over-$100 price tag for one shirt is nowhere near my wardrobe budget. So, naturally, a thrift store trip was in order—because I like to think I can do all the things!
My first attempt? Let’s just say it was a learning experience. I cropped the shirt too much, and my ruffled collar was so wide that I ended up looking like a beta fish. Not exactly the stylish, feminine touch I was going for.
However, attempt number two? That’s the one in the photo, and I have to say—I’m not mad at it at all! The ruffle collar is the perfect width, I took the time to do a finished bottom hem, and the 3/4 length sleeves (which I always love) add just the right touch.
Now that I’ve figured out the process, I feel confident about tackling the last two shirts I picked up at the thrift store. I’m excited to see how they turn out!
What do you think? Would you ever try upcycling a thrifted button-down into a stylish new piece?
